FIFA President, Gianni Infantino proposes selling private equity stakes in future world cups, causing chaos amongst the main football governing bodies as he is seen as selling the soul of football,

The Private Equity Plan

Infantino's plan includes selling off private stakes in the World Cup to private Investors and allowing them to buy minority stakes of the tournament, he has also offered member associations $40million dollars with half of that being available immediately in January 2027 if the accepted before the proposed September 19th deadline. One of the private investors includes a New York law firm, created by Joshua Kushner, who is the brother of U.S president Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Infantino and Trump were seen being very pally pally, at the World Cup final inside MetLife stadium, not to mention the controversy surrounding Folarin Balogun's suspended red card earlier in the tournament.

This has been viewed by the general consensus as Infantino's way of buying votes at the next presidential election and that there has been a severe lack of transparency between FIFA and the fans of our game. Major continental bodies ,including UEFA, have claimed they were kept completely in the dark about the scheme and have accused FIFA of trying to commercialize the World Cup. You only needed to watch a smidgen of the World Cup coverage this summer in the United States to know the majority of that accusation could be agreed with.

UEFA stand firm against FIFA

Europe's governing body, UEFA, has unanimously voted to boycott all FIFA competitions including both men's and women's World Cups, if FIFA's plan proceeds, UEFA claims that "the World Cup is not for sale."

UEFA put out a Statement lambasting the idea as "irresponsible and indefensible", which is hard to argue with on the basis of the commercialization of the World Cup in America, compared to the past tournaments in other parts of the world,

It is both irresponsible and indefensible that a proposal of such significance for football was conceived in secret and brought to the brink of approval without any meaningful consultation with those entrusted with stewarding the game. This is not merely a profound failure of leadership, but an abdication of FIFA’s duty as the custodian of world football.

Since UEFA' statement they have been joined by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and North America's CONCACAF, who have also publicly criticized and rejected the plan, which could see Infantino's presidency in serious jeopardy. With all these governing bodies at ends with FIFA, it really feels as though it is FIFA vs the rest of the world.

My Overall Opinions

It is hard to not be on the side of UEFA as a fan of football in this scenario, as they seem to be on the side of football. I agree with their statement somewhat wholeheartedly, the world cup is the culmination of the entire world coming together to celebrate the beautiful sport of football. However, this most recent World Cup felt like a plot to commercialize and bleed money from people, the extortionate cost of tickets and the constant questionable morals around some of the games left a sour taste in my mouth. Also the sheer amount of Infantino that was being shoved down the audiences throats was off putting, it was almost as though the broadcasters had to show him on TV every 15 minutes.

Whether this plan goes through or not there needs to be some sort of revisionism around the World Cup, we can't have another tournament like the last one. The focus should be on the players on the pitch, not the personalities in the crowd, and showcasing the best in the world on the grandest stage. Infantino seems like some sort of supervillain in the footballing community in the current day after this proposed plan, and hopefully he sees the light of his errors and we see some sort of change, whether that be a presidential change or Infantino himself changing his morals, we will see in due time.
